[Artist Statement]
Jun Homma’s work explores the relationship between visible and invisible elements that shape our perception of the world. Growing up in a suburban area near Tokyo during a period of rapid urban development, he witnessed landscapes constantly changing and leaving behind traces of memory and absence. These experiences became the starting point for his artistic practice.
Homma understands the world as composed of both visible forms and invisible structures—time, memory, historical forces, and social conditions that cannot be directly represented but strongly shape reality. Through sculpture, installation, and photo-based works, he creates situations in which these invisible elements become perceptible.
Since the late 1990s, Homma has developed a number of interconnected series that investigate these themes from different perspectives. In works such as Uncertain Stories, everyday objects and fragments from different temporal and cultural contexts are combined within sculptural structures, allowing multiple layers of time to intersect. In the ongoing series Now and Things (Time Line ), images of landscapes and ordinary objects gradually disappear or transform, suggesting the unstable relationship between present experience, memory, and historical narrative.
Across these series, Homma’s practice examines how invisible forces—time, history, and perception—shape the images and meanings that emerge in our everyday surroundings.
